After an extraordinary 46-year career in higher education, including 27 remarkable years of service at RPI, Steve Schwan, Director of Capital & Auxiliary Budget Planning, will retire effective September 15, 2026.
Steve’s career in higher education began with 19 years of service at Ithaca College and Cornell University. His son’s involvement in hockey eventually brought him to the Capital Region, where Steve would ultimately find his professional home at RPI. What followed was nearly three decades of dedication to RPI and a legacy that has become deeply woven into the financial and operational fabric of the Institute.
Throughout his time at RPI, Steve has played an instrumental role in advancing the financial stewardship of the Institute and the Administration Division. His leadership has touched some of RPI’s most significant and complex operations, from capital budget planning and the financial management of major capital projects to auxiliary operations, institutional financial planning, and key contracts across campus. His exceptional institutional knowledge and ability to understand both the financial details and the larger operational picture have made him an invaluable resource, trusted colleague, and respected leader throughout the RPI community.
Yet Steve’s impact extends far beyond the responsibilities of his position.
Those who have had the privilege of working with Steve know him for his infectious personality, tremendous energy, and unmistakable presence. He has a remarkable ability to bring people together and has been a moving force behind everything in which he is involved. Through his leadership, generosity, humor, and genuine investment in those around him, Steve has fostered an environment where people feel supported, valued, and encouraged to succeed.
Steve has given RPI not only his expertise but his unwavering dedication and commitment. His contributions have helped position the Administration Division and the Institute with continued financial and operational success, and the influence of his leadership will continue well beyond his retirement.
While we will deeply miss Steve’s knowledge, leadership, energy, presence, and skillful reenactments of movie quotes, we are incredibly grateful for the legacy he leaves behind and excited to celebrate this well-earned next chapter.
